John Cabot University's Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation

Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation

Since its founding in 2009, the Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation has quickly become a thriving community of writers in Rome. The Institute's reading series has featured such luminaries as Kim Addonizio, Marianne Boruch, Peter Campion, Kevin Craft, Eliza Griswold, Joseph Harrison, Jay Hopler, Kimberly Johnson, Richard Kenney, Jhumpa Lahiri, Brad Leithauser, Robert Polito, Mary Jo Salter, and Edmund White. Our Summer Writers in Residence have been Mark Strand and Simon Mawer (2010), Dorothy Allison and Marilyn Hacker (2011), Billy Collins and Joyce Carol Oates (2012) and in Summer 2013 the Institute welcomed Jhumpa Lahiri.

With workshops in the major genres (Fiction, Poetry, Creative Nonfiction) and Literary Translation offered in the fall, spring, and summer terms, the Institute is the place for creative writing students to spend serious time on their writing as they get to know the Eternal City.

SUMMER SESSION

Anyone interested in participating in a Creative Writing workshop or taking courses in Literary Translation can participate in the Institute's summer session. It's easy! Just apply as a regular Summer I student and sign up for at least one of the many creative writing or translation courses offered. Courses are taught by renowned faculty from the United States, Italy, and Europe. The costs are the same as JCU's regular summer program with the added bonus that you will be invited to additional social and educational events with students and faculty who love creative writing, translation, and Rome.

SEMESTER, YEAR, OR GAP YEAR ABROAD

With the Department of English Language and Literature, the Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation also offers classes during the regular academic year. Creative writing students can take a semester or a year abroad in Rome and stay on-track with their creative writing major or minor requirements, or students can spend their gap year studying creative writing in Rome. The Institute offers a rotating selection of workshops in Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry, and Literary Translation. Classes in English Literature, Art History, History, Political Science, and other liberal arts courses contribute to the overall educational and international experience of study-abroad students.

JCU is committed to building the Institute into a flagship program for international education in Creative Writing and Literary Translation. We believe that each student and faculty member who is part of the Institute contributes to as well as gains from a liberal arts experience of international learning in the eternal city.

Join us in Rome! Students interested in participating in the Institute can apply directly to JCU; see Information for Students. Faculty and departments who are interested in participating in the Institute should contact Professor Carlos Dews, Director of the Institute at cwinstitute@johncabot.edu.
